Changemaker Spotlight: September 2021

Jory Gwasdoff

Family Promise of San Joaquin County, est. 2017

In one sentence, what do you do?

Starting in early 2022, we will be helping families experiencing homelessness achieve sustainable independence through a community-based response. In the meantime, we are still committed to giving back to the community. In the past few months, we raised $28,888 in gift cards that is being donated to 5 local school districts – Stockton, Lincoln, Lodi, Tracy, Manteca.

What drew you to the work you are doing in Stockton?

I want to uplift the local community and help be part of the solution in supporting people in need.

What inspires you about Stockton?

I have traveled all around the world and Stockton is the most diverse city I have ever seen. While we might look different from one another, there is a pride and welcoming nature to those who live here.

What advice do you have for those looking to make change in Stockton?

Never stop learning. Change is complex and there are often layers upon layers of information behind every problem. Find others who can help. One person can inspire change, but it takes a whole village to enact change.

You're an innovator in your field. With the world rapidly changing around us, how are you adapting and what support can Third City Coalition members offer?

Be flexible and always willing to accept help. We are constantly strengthened by our growing community. Family Promise of San Joaquin County is partnered with 27 local congregations, but we must continue to grow and build relationships with people and organizations who want to help make positive change.
