Changemaker Spotlight: December 2021

Alicia Valenzuela

Stockton CHAI, est. 2020

In one sentence, what do you do?
Encourage wellness in arts integration and community.

What drew you to the work you are doing in Stockton?
Stockton CHAI is a movement, and belongs to the people. Healing arts needs to be in all areas of our society and artists know best how to integrate creativity with healing.

What inspires you about Stockton?
Stockton is a historical and dynamic space and people. I marvel at the resiliency and courage of the people past and present. I am most inspired by those who continue to celebrate the collective identity, courage, and dreams of our diverse neighbors and friends.

What advice do you have for those looking to make change in Stockton?
Finding your voice is easier when surrounded by changemakers who are owning their growth and love what they do. When you encounter a challenge or commit a personal mistake, forgive yourself and immediately reframe it as a learning experience. When you can, open doors for others with grace. Meet fear head on. If it wasn't hard, it wouldn't be worth doing.

You're an innovator in your field. With the world rapidly changing around us, how are you adapting and what support can Third City Coalition members offer?
I maintain a healthy amount of curiosity and seek context before engaging the next problem. I have accountability partners who I trust to hear their opinion. I can use help breaking down the stigma of paying artists. Artists donate time and resources regularly. Help me by balancing the need with creating collaborative fiscal sponsorship opportunities.
